History
Sevmorneftegeofizika (SMNG) was established in 1979 to provide geological/geophysical exploration for oil and gas across Arctic Seas of the former Soviet Union. Over 1979-2003 SMNG was a state-owned enterprise. At the end of 2003, the Federal State Unitary Enterprise "Sevmorneftegeofizika" was transformed into the Joint Stock Company "Sevmorneftegeofizika" (JSC SMNG), with a 100% share in federal property. JSC SMNG’s head office and the management are in Murmansk (NW Russia).
Since its foundation, Sevmorneftegeofizika acquires the most volume of geophysical explorations across Russian Arctic studying regional structure, providing geological/geophysical exploration for oil and gas and proposing the prospects for exploratory drilling. Over 30 years SMNG has shot 550 000 linear km of 2D seismic lines and about 6000 sq.km of 3D surveys in the Russian Arctic along. By the results of these operations, 327 prospects were identified and 38 prospects were prepared for deep exploratory drilling. Honoring the seismic data acquired by SMNG and the results of marine exploratory drilling made by FSUE Arktikmorneftegazrazvedka and LLC Gazflot offshore West-Arctic Russia (Barents, Pechora and Kara Seas, Ob and Tazov bays) 18 oil, gas and gas-condensate fields have been discovered. Marine geophysical explorations and particularly seismic prospecting carried out by SMNG have played one of the leading roles in the estimation of the petroleum potential of Arctic regions. Today the unique geological/geophysical database of the company represents 90 % of all available modern geological/geophysical data acquired on Russian Arctic shelf.
In the beginning of 90th of last century when the state has practically stopped to finance geological exploration in Arctic, SMNG actively began to search for the new markets where its specialists could not only put their knowledge, skills and proficiency to use but also to reach a new level of quality. And such a market was only one – the world market of marine geophysical services, with the highest technologies, state-of-the-art techniques and equipment, strict requirements to the safety of operations and qualifications of personnel. It took years to upgrade and re-equip the vessels with modern western systems, to train the personnel and to form highly competent teams adapted for the requirement of the world oil market. All this has been done without attraction of any state funds.
In 1990 the first two vessels shot their field season in the North Sea under the contracts with foreign clients.
Today
Today, Sevmorneftegeofizika is undisputed leader in Russia in marine geophysics. Over the past 20 years SMNG has succeeded in earning a reputation as a reliable highly professional marine geophysical contractor in the world market. SMNG is virtually the only Russian marine geophysical company to operate in the world oil market directly for its clients.
SMNG is dynamic company and pliably respond to the changing conditions of marine geophysical services market. SMNG main priority is the quality of operations in accordance with international industry standards, compliance with the duration of the contract and respect for the interests of the customer.
SMNG owns a specialized fleet, comprising four deepwater seismic vessels, two with a 3D seismic capability, and two shallow-water vessels, fleet base and necessary production and economic infrastructure.
Currently Sevmorneftegeofizika has acquired the most volume of seismic operations in the world oil market. Six SMNG vessels equipped with modern navigation and geophysical systems are performing seismic acquisitions in the Arctic Shelf and Antarctica, the North Sea and Greenland, Africa and South America, off India, Vietnam and Indonesia, in the Azov, Black and Caspian Seas.
Given the strong reduction in the global market of geophysical services company's efforts are aimed at entering in new areas of the world oil market (the Far East, South-East Asia and the Middle East).
SMNG has a Radionavigation Department, which has been providing positioning services of the company vessels and its customers with navigation-geodetic equipment, to be used in offshore geophysical operations both in the Russian Seas and worldwide.
SMNG operates two processing centers located in Murmansk and Gelendzhik, utilizing modern computers and a comprehensive range of seismic data processing software capable of processing 2D and 3D data sets from offshore, transition zone and onshore areas.
Many years’ work has formed a highly competent interpretation department, involved in a wide range of projects, such as integrated regional studies of the sedimentary basins in order to assess their hydrocarbon potential, proposal of prospects for deep exploratory drilling, reservoir characterization study and creation of three-dimensional field geological models.
JSC SMNG owns a subsidiary SMNG South, located in Gelendzhik (the Russian sector of the Black Sea). Here in 1998 a computer centre was set up for processing onshore and offshore 2D seismic data.
